Dub Reggae feat. Isha Bel
For this Splice Originals release, we took a similar approach that you would to recording a dub record, leaning more on overdubs where you'd typically have a live band. Each layer was meticulously performed and processed to create a lo-fi vibe. Though this pack features bass, keys, horns, synths, and guitar layers, the focal point is Isha Bel's powerful, metallic vocals, delivered with bold tenacity. Reminiscent of the soulful sounds of the early days of reggae, balanced by the raw gritty energetic delivery of modern styles, Isha Bel has lended vocals and written songs for artists such as Chaka Demus, Jimmy Riley, and more. She's worked with several producers across the globe with vinyl and digital releases in Europe, the U.S., and South Africa.
Horseman in Dub
This pack is a true distillation of our hugely successful “ In Dub Featuring Horseman” series, with over 350 totally unique loops, recorded and mixed by the master of dub that is Mike Pelanconi (aka Prince Fatty). Utilising only the finest in analog, from vintage mics to tape to real spring reverb this is the truly authentic dub sound, these loops are guaranteed to add that special dub sauce to your productions. It goes without saying, DrumDrops are super excited by the launch of this pack on the Splice platform. We really hope you enjoy using them as much as we enjoyed creating them.
Dub Reggae
Dub Reggae is the follow-up to Splice Sessions’ first Island Reggae pack from our studio time at Anguilla Music Academy. Dub music originated as a subgenre of reggae and is characterized by remixes significantly manipulating the original recording, usually through the removal of vocal parts, emphasis on the rhythm section (the stripped-down drum-and-bass track is known as a riddim in the reggae dub communities), the use of studio effects such as echo and reverb, and the occasional dubbing of vocal or instrumental snippets from another piece of music or sound. The style was pioneered in the late 1960s and early 1970s by artists like King Tubby, Scientist, Lee "Scratch" Perry, among others. To celebrate this genre that pushed music forward across continents and styles, we brought some of Anguilla’s most prominent musicians, listed below, together to bring you the essential components of dub reggae along with some song-starters straight from the Caribbean. All featured musicians on this sample pack include:Drums - Jaiden FlemingDrums - Kyle WoodleyBass - Larry HodgeBass - Curtis RobinsonGuitar - Gordon HazelGuitar - Daniel ConnorKeys - Kerwyn GoddardKeys - Dady HodgieKeys - Kevin ArchibaldKeys - Dennis WarringtonVocals / Harmonica - Bankie BanxVocals - Omalie 360
Senegalese Dub
Produced by Pape Armand Boye at La Boutique Studios in Dakar, this pack brings together some of the top African reggae and dub players to showcase the Senegalese spin on the genre. Processed through Roland Space Echos and other classic boxes, this pack gets close to the classic ‘70s sound of early dub music by Osbourne "King Tubby" Ruddock, Lee "Scratch" Perry, and Errol Thompson. These sounds are raw material primed to be spun together into a kaleidoscope of psychedelic, spacey songs. Or, used as a subtle hint, a nod to those who provided us with the rhythms and methods that influenced so much popular music today.
Scientist - Space Invaders V1
Hopeton Overton Brown, the Jamaican-born producer and recording engineer, rose to fame in the 1980s mixing dub music as "Scientist". A protégé of King Tubby, Scientist pioneered the dub reggae genre in the 1970s alongside Ruddock, Bunny Lee, Philip Smart, Pat Kelly, and Prince Jammy. For this pack, the Splice team gathered the finest reggae session musicians to join Scientist in our LA studio to capture the essential sounds of dub - and beyond. This collection is dripping in layers of riddim, bass, echo, and reverb used to sculpt soundscapes that draw attention to the shape and depth of the space between sounds, and the sounds themselves.
