Afrominimal
Producer 814 (Ismaila Talla) returns to Splice with a futuristic minimal approach to Afrobeats featuring R&B style chords and an attention to detail so each element shines.Some music historians define minimalist music as a fusion of Western art music with non-Western cyclical structures. According to this theory, minimalist music composers of the Western world like Steve Reich, Terry Riley, and Philip Glass experimented in the 1960s and '70s by incorporating Indonesian Gamelan and African drum music into their compositions, inventing minimalist music. Other music historians, such as the writers at Musicophilia, offer up another, more likely, theory: that musical minimalism's foundations, apex, and influences are found in the music of African and Afrodiasporic people. Meaning, minimalist music wasn't created by incorporating elements of African music, it was created by African musicians.According to the Musicophilia website, "In the music on ‘Afrominimalism' (a collection of songs from the '60s and '70s), minimalism takes different forms with different emphasis, but in ways that have a common core. Minimalism can mean any or all of the following: giving the sound not made equal weight to what is played; employing space between sounds with care; utilizing restraint as a means of heightening sustained impact; using intentionally fewer and simpler elements but intermingling them in complex ways; emphasizing the whole over its constituent parts. Or put more simply: minimalism is music where less is absolutely more."

As described in our Terms of Use, you may not use SIRMA's name, image or likeness without SIRMA’s express written permission.New York-based Turkish vocalist, songwriter, and producer SIRMA makes her debut on Splice with a genre-blending, bilingual vocal pack ‘SIRMA’s Vocal Palette’.Written, recorded, and edited by SIRMA, and mixed by James Skehan, the vocal samples in this collection range from infectiously melodic hooks to haunting cinematic textures. The lively demo track produced by Skehan gives a taste of SIRMA’s EDM-infused toplines. But, you’ll have to dive in deeper to hear the true versatility of this pack. From vocal chops to screams, and operatic one-shots to Middle-eastern battle cries, SIRMA goes beyond her familiar brand of alt-pop to reveal the uncharted corners of her artistry. After studying at Berklee College of Music, SIRMA moved to NYC to work as a sound engineer by day and recording artist by night. Her demos caught the attention of EDM superstars ILLENIUM and Said The Sky. Following their career-launching singles “Drop Our Hearts (feat. Sirma)” and “Drop Our Hearts, Pt. 2 (feat. Sirma)”, SIRMA embarked on her own journey to establish her sound. The Kopuz is one of the oldest string instruments to be found and is mostly associated with Kurdistan, Turkey & Persia (modern-day Iran) and is used in various Sufi ceremonies and traditional music played throughout the region. More contemporary instruments include the Baglama and fretless guitar, both with their own distinguished sound signature, as well as the Moroccan Mandol complete this pack, giving an edgy, Sahara-like feeling. CONFIGURATION, a GRRL x Made of Oak moment
James Mapley-Brittle (GRRL) and Nick Sanborn (Made of Oak) make very different music but often end up playing the same parties, thanks to the eclecticism of the North Carolina dance scene. GRRL is a longtime NTS radio resident and true tastemaker of online underground dance music, while Sanborn is an electropop savant, best known as the instrumentalist half of legendary band Sylvan Esso and his solo work as Made of Oak.Realizing their shared obsession with peak-hour club music, the two began to get together to jam and find a creative chemistry; it didn’t take long for the shared language to emerge, resulting in the jolt of energy that became Inertia, the duo’s new collaborative EP. From the Inertia sessions came a massive library of analog recordings, their favorite moments of which became polished into CONFIGURATION. Nick’s expertise around modular synth design and James’ mastery of club grooves spawned an eclectic toolset of crunchy kicks, electrical zaps, analog imperfections, and danceable drum patterns.“Our collaboration is more about capturing that raw, spur-of-the-moment energy and less about making the cleanest, most-perfecting-sounding thing possible. He's also known for his official remixes of iconic songs like the hit "Vuli Ndlela" by the late Brenda Fassie, and the legendary Mango Groove's record Home Talk.Pioneered by Thakzin, an artist born in the Ivory Park township, 3-step is a dance music movement that emerged during the 2020 lockdowns in South Africa, and has since swept the global electronic music landscape. Experimenting with Amapiano, Afro House, Afrobeats, Highlife, and more, Thakzin did away with any preconception of what production should sound like and rebuilt his signature sound with a new, singular focus: to create tension and release.
