Raised in Berkeley, California, Emmit Fenn is a singer, songwriter, and producer of offbeat, cinematic soundscapes in the realm of indie electronica. Fenn first turned to the piano and composing at the age of 12 as a means of distraction when his parents separated. He later picked up the guitar and violin and went on to study composition and music theory. He was in college when his single "Painting Grey," released in 2015 and became a viral hit, accumulating millions of plays. Her work has gained the attention of Iggy Pop, David Byrne & Adult Swim, and has recently gone viral on Tik Tok for her "brain scratch" sound: a hyper-stimulating binaural blend of ASMR, IDM, and ambient. We sat down with Tipton in her community garden to pick her brain a bit about the sounds in her pack. “I wanted to give people access to a lot of the ‘brain scratch’ sounds to make their own stimulating beats, collages and messes. Most ASMR is tactile and made from recording real physical objects, but I wanted to simulate that digitally using synthesis and physical modeling, as well as transform real ASMR field recordings into something very digital.
