Pastries
Nearly a decade and some after his untimely death, the late yet legendary J. Dilla has been celebrated countless times for his accomplishments and his untouchable and innovative style of production. His magnum-opus, and highly emotional release, “Donuts” came just three days before his death in February 2006. “Donuts” is not only his most publicized work but the calling-card of those who seek to imitate his style and/or pay homage. It is important to note, however, that Dilla’s sound in 2006 was the result of a series of sonic evolutions that had taken place over the decade. The last sounds we heard from Jay Dee on “Donuts” were a masterful collage of chopped samples from various records, but before his move to Los Angeles, collaboration with Madlib, and aside from his work with the Soulquarians, Dilla crafted instrumentals that would later end up on a beat tape known as “Old Donuts” (also known as “Another Batch”). Some of these beats can be recognized as interludes from Common’s “Like Water For Chocolate” or instrumentals from Slum Village’s earlier mixtapes, but every one of these beats shares the same sonic palette: harmonically rich samples ripped from vinyl, looped over the grooviest and crispiest drum loops programmed by Dilla himself. “Old Donuts” has more of an east coast influence, as he was directly influenced by the likes of Pete Rock and Q-Tip.With “Pastries” the Soul Surplus team sought to pay homage to a less popular, yet equally important sound of the legendary producer. Since we are now including clean stems of each loop, we were able to push the saturation and leave in some extra noise for each of these loops in order to come as painstakingly close to the sound of “Old Donuts” as we could. Along with 15 Melodic Loops are over 120 one-shots of organ, synth pads, electric piano, acoustic guitar, nylon-string guitar, and electric guitar. We included about 20 one-shots of sub-bass (recorded with a Fender Jazz Bass V through a 1073 preamp/EQ and a Pultec EQ for earth-shattering subsonic tones) for you to load into your sampler or MPC to get those same signature bass sounds as Jay Dee. While the timbre of each loop varies, the vibe and rhythmic groove that sculpted Dilla’s sound is alive in each and every loop. From smooth, simple baselines, to warm, slightly saturated electric guitar chords, to the classic sound of acoustic/nylon string guitars, there is no shortage of inspiration to be found in “Pastries”.

Lofi Scifi with Adam Schatz
Lo-fi Sci-fi with Adam Schatz harkens back to the early days of synthesizers and 1960s-1970s sci-fi jazz with the use of tenor sax, organs, bass clarinet, electric bass, drum machines, synthesizers such as Neon Egg's Planetarium, Moog Sub 37, and many more instruments—all passed through tape machines. This experimental pack explores what it looks like to put a slightly modern twist on the avant-garde music of the 1960s. Adam Schatz is a songwriter, improviser, and producer from Newton, Massachusetts. He moved to New York to study the saxophone, where he formed the collaborative improvising band, Father Figures, and adventurous rock band, Landlady. Schatz treats all of his projects as an adventure, observing the world with fresh, almost alien eyes. From his studio, The Chamber of Commerce, he has produced recordings for artists such as Renata Zeiguer, Danke, Isaac Gillespie, and more. Dusty Drum Machines
This pack is the fourth installment exploring the unique instruments the legendary electronics store, Three Wave Music in New Jersey has to offer. This one highlights rare drum machines and drum boxes. It features creative percussion and drum loops in a range of styles from hip hop to house to disco, electro, techno, and trap. We used granular synthesis and outboard processing with Elysia Mpressors, Lexicon, and TC Helicon effects to take these cosmic rhythm boxes to new depths. We recorded the sounds and grooves of six super rare drum machines and boxes including the Simmons SDS9, Synsonics 5300, Boss DR55, E-mu Drumulator, Boss DR110, and the Korg DDM 220. DnB Textures
D&B Textures is a deep dive into the sounds of melodic, organic, and atmospheric Drum & Bass and includes live-recorded drum breaks, smooth, organic pads, evocative ambiences, weighty basslines, music kits for inspiration, keys and synth loops, tempo-synced FX, and a wide range of one-shot samples of basses, drums and percussion, FX, and synths. A variety of vintage and modern studio gear is used to steer clear of the artificially clean sound sometimes associated with "in the box" productions. Grooves played on a live drum kit were sampled, chopped, and pitched in an Akai S3000 for that classic tone software samplers can't match. A Novation Bass Station 2 alongside synthesiser-like EMU and Yamaha samplers provided speaker-shaking bass. And what better machine to provide truly D&B sounding pads than a custom programmed Roland JV-2080? Each sound was processed through a golden-era Studiomaster analogue desk, gracing the waveforms with its thick preamp tone and excellent EQ before being captured by a mastering grade Metric Halo 3D audio interface. Also used were hardware Oakley-Moog filters and a tape deck. While the focus is primarily on the melodic end of the Drum & Bass spectrum, this pack is beneficial to everyone who likes a bit of character in their productions.

126 Guitar Strings with Rotem Sivan
One Hundred and Twenty-Six Guitar Strings is the second in a series of sample packs from guitarist, producer, and composer extraordinaire Rotem Sivan, so named for the number of strings on the 20 beautiful D’Angelico guitars to record it (one was a 12-string). Rotem wrote and recorded nine delicious chord progressions in a variety of styles, and we tracked them using a Fishman Triple Play MIDI pickup for some extra synth guitar goodness.
