Resampled Cinematic Soul
This Splice Originals release was created in collaboration with multi-instrumentalist, composer, arranger, and music producer Stuart Bogie on winds. With an eye on the cinematic orchestral styles of jazz and soul from the ‘60s and ‘70s, this pack contains strings, saxophones, flutes, electric piano, piano, guitar, harp, vocals, and Hammond organ. We pulled influence from Philadelphia orchestral soul acts like the O'Jays and Billy Paul crossed with soul-jazz acts like Lonnie Liston Smith and Roy Ayers. There’s also a heavy dose of Henry Mancini, Ray Conniff, and Ennio Morricone for orchestral sensibilities. As much as we love the iconic style of cinematic orchestration, we couldn’t leave these sounds at that. We resampled the stacks and other elements in the style of J Dilla, KRS One, and other boom bap hip hop acts. There’s also a heavy dose of hip hop and trap drums featured in the collection, processed to thump for any banging hip hop or pop style.

Chop Shop: Resampled Soul Stacks plays the role of the crate digger to its companion pack Chop Shop: Vintage Soul Stacks, created in collaboration with Arthouse Acoustics. Taking full influence from the nostalgic sounds of cinematic soul music and vintage rhythm & blues featured in Vintage Soul Stacks, we took these true-to-era samples and chopped and re-processed to create inspiring melodic loops and boom-bap style soul loops. Modern inspiration coated in vintage warmth and saturation. We resampled the original live compositions and raw stems, creating loop layers that combine the sonics of rare vinyl with modern left-field sound design. Using classic hip-hop chopping, pitch and time, reversing, saturation and secret sauce, the samples could inspire lofi beat making and hip-hop, trap and rap or even pop and house. All sounds are 100% royalty-free and every loop has been carefully key tagged and tempo-synced.

Heavily influenced by ‘60s and ‘70s soul music, the performers of this pack layered stacks of guitars, keys, drums, percussion, and horns. Crafted in Brick Road Studio in Scottsdale, AZ, these sounds are naturally sunbaked with a rock n roll edge and blues vibe. The instrumentalists pulled inspiration from some of the most influential and innovative soul artists of the time including The Temptations, Marvin Gaye, Al Green, War, and Stevie Wonder. Each of these artists brought something new and unique to the scene, whether it was sensuality, grit, pop charm, or social commentary. This pack explores it all. The performers include Charles Dorman (keys, drums, vocals), Kimball Barker (guitar), Robert Lopez- Hanshaw (bass), and Karen O'Brien (vocals).

Imagine if your favorite old soul vinyl had the lyrics of today. Splice Originals: Timelapse uses the techniques of yesterday, injected with the modern stylings of today. Produced by Charles Dorman, Timelapse contains original samples from classic soul, Motown, funk, and doo-wop music inspired by legends like Curtis Mayfield, Parliament Funkadelic, and Marvin Gaye. Dorman chopped up these samples for Dila-style resampled sounds and included the original versions for you to engineer to your liking. This pack includes warm bass lines from a live Fender J Bass, heart-melting doo-wop leads from James Stanley and Alex Montalvo, ratchet funk vocals, guitar solos from Kimball Barker, grinding organs, evolving electric piano, dirty trip hop drums, chopped-up lo-fi samples, and more. Chop Shop: Vintage Soul Stacks
Chop Shop: Vintage Soul Stacks pays tribute to the nostalgic sounds of cinematic soul music and vintage rhythm & blues. Created in collaboration with Arthouse Acoustics, we recorded vintage electric guitar, live pianos, a horn section, orchestral arrangements and gospel inspired vocals with true-to-era microphones, recording techniques and post production. Many of the greatest samples in hip-hop history are lifted from classic records of this era and the soulful motifs, recording techniques and instrumentation choices echo on to this day. The compositional process took influence from genre defining, legendary artists and groups of the late 60s and early 70s including Sam Cooke, Aretha Franklin, Dionne Warwick, Minnie Riperton and The Delfonics. The Arthouse Acoustics team worked with professional musicians to compose and arrange full song sections and ideas. These ‘stacks’ are included as full mixed compositions, intro sections and solo’d instrumental layers for full flexibility. We also included a collection of one shot ‘stabs and hits’ featuring bass guitar, vocals and guitar licks. We studied the work of producers, engineers and labels of the time to give more insight into the recording and mixing techniques used. A combination of DI, ribbon mics and vintage Neumann condensers were used on every instrument with valve preamp warmth. Where possible, spring and plate reverbs added 70s colour and feel. A strict selection of limited post production tools were consciously employed including hard stereo panning, vocal multi tracking, tape saturation and compression and re amping via vintage guitar pedals. All the sounds are 100% royalty-free and every loop has been carefully key tagged and tempo-synced.
Smoke Dreams: Soul Tapes
Childhood friends Chris Hartz (Childish Gambino) and Nick Paul (St. Lucia) grew up in Los Angeles. Beginning their careers as players, a drummer and a pianist respectively, they’ve both carved places in the music business as sought-after producers, music directors, and players. Coming from backgrounds of soul, jazz, and hip hop, it felt natural to create a pack for incorporating all of these elements while paying homage to their home state of California. The result is a collection of sounds reminiscent of the original soul sessions mixed with the production nuances of today. All of the samples are recorded through analog processing as well as to tape. These samples have soul heart with a laidback, chilled out vibe similar to Toro y Moi, Tame Impala, and Blood Orange.

Drawing inspiration from the iconic rhythm sections of Hitsville USA, this drum collection relives the Motown sound with its signature driving, in-the-pocket pulse. Built in 1959, the Motown studios on Grand Boulevard in Detroit, utilized custom reverb chambers in the ceiling to achieve the signature splash heard across their records, and this effect has been carefully reconstructed throughout this sample collection. Produced by the Youngtones and Xan Young, this soul and R&B-inspired sample pack is influenced by the likes of The Chi-Lites, Minnie Riperton, Isaac Hayes, and The Delfonics. Each composition serves up layers of strings, keys, vocals, and the standard soul rhythm section. These samples have been externally processed with the Elysia Karakter and Anamod ATS-1 Tape Simulator to inject some vintage warmth into the sound. For more vibe, we resampled these tracks with copious amounts of chops and varispeed. There are expertly crafted drum one-shots to craft your own beats in addition to the vibey boom bap drum loops to get you started.
Sunshine Vibes
For this pack, we teamed up with the multi-instrumentalist, composer, arranger, and music producer, Stuart Bogie. He recorded tenor, alto, and baritone sax, as well as flute at his studio in Brooklyn, NY. With the intention of establishing a sound reminiscent of classic 1970s soul, these ideas were layered with electric piano, Wurlitzer, piano, guitar, bass, and a vintage Arp Odyssey. The sounds in this pack were inspired by the likes of legends Roy Ayers, Isaac Hayes, Lonnie Liston Smith, and Minnie Riperton, among others of the time. You’ll find stabby horns, swelling electric pianos, crunchy organs, and warm tones throughout. These samples are the sounds of summer sunshine rooftop hangs.
Concrete Jungle: Hip-Hop Soul
The classic sounds of the streets come straight to your library with Concrete Jungle. Inspired by Jazz-Rap/Golden Era Hip Hop samples from the early 90’s that contained so many instruments chopped up from vinyl. The Soul Surplus team intentionally crafted smooth yet gritty loops that are full of musicality and instrumentation giving ode to a time that was all about sampling. You’ll have access to over half a gig of sound containing more than 150 melodic loops, and stems, as well as over 200 one shots! Everything from guitars, keyboards and synths, to drums and even a special trumpet appearance on the loops give so many possibilities for creating—all played by our in house team of professional musicians. Finally for authentic texture we had samples processed through a tape machine, as well as having some instrumentalists cut to tape, for added vintage warmth. Whether you need a song starter or specific instruments to add to your personal sound library, this release is perfect for expanding the range of any producer’s arsenal of sounds.

We recorded and layered the arrangements multiple times to create a larger chamber ensemble sound that resembles the classic Motown Records and Brunswick Records releases of the 70s. Influences that inspired the string compositions in this pack range from the classics of Marvin Gaye, Isaac Hayes, and The Delphonics all the way through modern acts like Khalid and Daniel Ceasar. Summer Breaks: Vintage Soul Stacks
Summer Breaks: Vintage Soul Stacks pays tribute to classic soul motifs, nostalgic compositions and vintage rhythm & blues. Many of the most recognisable samples in hip-hop history sample records of this era and this collection channels those special moments when needle hits vinyl and reveals the perfect inspiration. Created in collaboration with Arthouse Acoustics, we recorded electric guitar, crisp live strings, smokey horns, upright pianos and electric keys, a horn section and live drums with true-to-era microphones, recording techniques and post production. The team worked with professional musicians to compose and arrange full song concepts and ideas. These ‘stacks’ are included as full studio compositions, ‘vintage masters’ and solo’d instrumental layers for full flexibility. We studied the work of producers, engineers and labels of the time to give more insight into the recording and mixing techniques used. A combination of DI, ribbon mics and vintage Neumann condensers were used on every instrument with valve preamp warmth. Where possible, spring and plate reverbs added 70s colour and feel. A strict selection of limited post production tools were consciously employed including hard stereo panning, vocal multi tracking, tape saturation and compression and re-amping via vintage guitar pedals. All the sounds are 100% royalty-free and every loop has been carefully key tagged and tempo-synced.

‘Chipmunk Soul’ is a term coined by the popular Hip Hop trend of the 2000’s that would have producers like Kanye West pitch soul and R&B vocalists in high registers emulating the squeaky voice of a chipmunk. “High Definition,” is a sample pack inspired by this trend with loads of loops that are perfect for building any track. Session Tapes
Far too often, producers have a habit of over-processing their music. Between compression, reverb, delay, saturation, and modulation, we tend to overdo things a tad bit when it comes to mixing and creating sounds. “Session Tapes” is our answer to this over-processing and overdoing that we are prone to in the 21st century. “Session Tapes” is 15 Melodic Loops and over 140 one-shots of untouched and raw soul. We featured only acoustic and electric instruments like electric, nylon string, and acoustic guitar. We also worked in electric bass and piano/pianet for a natural and warm sonic bed to these arrangements. There are no synthesizers, and very little reverb to be found in “Session Tapes”. We still kept to our tried-and-true processing, with dry stem options for maximum versatility. Organic, warm, and soulful.

60s Motown Drops
60s Motown Drops features loops and hits inspired by the legendary Motown Records sound, engineered, performed and produced by Timmy Rickard. This album takes its inspiration from the sound of the 1960's Detroit era of Motown Records, when the 'Funk Brothers' were the main musicians behind this pioneering sound and style. This release is influenced by artists such as The Four Tops, The Temptations, Marvin Gaye and Gladys Knight And The Pips. Motown Drops delves deep into the catalogue of this revered record label, and includes not only the Funk Brothers signature grooves, but also a wide variety of lesser known tracks, making this release as varied as it is classic. To recreate the 60s Motown Sound is almost impossible. Kits varied from session to session but Timmy studied the sound and we think we have created a great representation of the sound. Recorded in a large live room at Livingston 1 studio in London, the room was mic’d up as if there was a full Motown band in the room – brass section, vocal mic, talkback mic and then two mics on the kit – a kick, and a kit mic placed above the bass drum, between the rack toms and below the ride. Mix these mics into a 60s kit and voila the Motown sound is created. For customers that purchase the multi-tracks you will have the audio from each microphone in the room so you can mix the sound exactly as you want it.For the kit we used Timmy’s 1960s Ludwig club date kit with a 20” x 14” kick drum one 12” x 8” rack tom and a 14” floor tom. Four snares were used – two Ludwig Pioneer Snares, a Ludwig Hollywood Snare and a Slingerland Shelbyville Snare. We used two cymbals a Zildjian Trans Stamp and a Zildjian Constantinople Hammered cymbal (both doubled up as rides and crashes) and some Zildjian vintage hi-hats. Across the tracks there is tambourine, claps and congas. All the drums used Remo Ambassador heads.Mic wise we used Neumann Valve U47’s & 67s, Coles ribbon mics, a Sony C38b and an AKG Valve C28. Mic pre’s used were UA2-610’s, Telefunken V76s and a Neve 1073. All of the mics were recorded without EQ or compression except the overhead microphone which used an EAR valve EQ and compressor. All of the tracks were recorded on to a 16 track Studer A80 2” tape machine and then transferred to Pro Tools for mixing and editing. The drum tracks were mixed in Livingston 2 on a Custom Series CS75 console powered by Neve which is a modern desk based on vintage Neve technology. Included in the stems is an EMT plate reverb stem used on some of the drum tracks.

With this deep dive into mid-70s soul and funk, producer and multi-instrumentalist Luke Omalley shares his sophisticated, wide-ranging playing style and mastery of tone. Channeling Isaac Hayes, Darondo, the Chi-Lites, and early Funkadelic, he weaves mellow bass and guitar rhythms with interwoven, plucky lead lines, and searing, wah-infused leads.Now based in Hamburg, Germany, this is Luke O’Malley’s 4th pack for Splice. He played these parts on a 1960s Hofner Bass, a 1950 Harmony Jupiter, a 1966 Fender Coronado, and a DIY Strat played through a Filmosound projector converted into a guitar amp, a Homemade Tube amp, a Dynacord 2000G (tube amp), and an Echolette m150 (tube amp).

Written by Gavin Turek and Chris Hartz and produced and performed by Hartz, Splice Originals: Technicolor Soul was made from the session files for Gavin Turek’s new record. Recorded and performed at Sunset Sound Studio in Los Angels, CA, this pack is brimming with guitars, organs, synths, huge drums, choir, slapping bass lines, winds, and horns. It offers dynamic soul sounds with tinges of lo-fi hip hop, chillwave, pop, and gospel. Hartz has produced and performed as a member of Childish Gambino and Passion Pit. He also makes music for the TV show, Happy Endings and produces, arranges, and performs music for Cirque du Soleil. As a producer, he collaborated closely with fellow LA-native Gavin Turek on her latest album. A professionally trained dancer and child of two musician parents, Gavin Turek has drawn comparisons anywhere from Tina Turner to Beyoncé, but has made her mark as a force of her own, signature style.

The Vault: Golden Soul Resampled
Arthouse Acoustics presents The Vault: Golden Soul Resampled, a rare collection of original soul samples & full compositions reminiscent of 60’s & 70’s soul. Expect beautiful harmonised vocals, soaring strings, sparkling brass sections, and rhythmic guitars. We composed, arranged, and recorded with some of the finest session musicians to bring you authentic melodic loops, that we then broke down, resampled, reworked, and chopped to provide a diverse collection of samples that will fit into boom bap just as well as they will into contemporary trap and hip hop. We used authentic production techniques and analogue processing to create soul loops dripping in class and style.We included a brand new drum kit, each drum was made with boom bap in mind, using live drum samples and coloured with saturation and vintage processing.
Memphis Soul Horn Stax
Memphis Soul Horn Stax is our first Splice Originals pack created in quarantine. Ben Wareham recorded all of the original sounds in his own home, holed up with every horn and wind instrument imaginable. The Splice Originals production team worked with him remotely throughout the entire process and polished the pack up in post. Wareham and the Originals team set out to achieve the arrangement sound of the legendary Memphis soul record label, Stax—home to Otis Redding, Booker T. & the MGs, and Isaac Hayes—to name a few. Wareham layered a baritone, alto, and tenor sax in addition to his trumpet to get this vibe. In this pack, you’ll find punchy stabs, swells, pads, arpeggios, and melodies all stacked together for that southern soul sound.
Soulful Piano & Keys: Resampled
Soulful Piano & Keys: Resampled explores and reimagines the sounds and performances of our trilogy collection Soulful Piano & Keys Volumes 1-3. The original samples were flipped and resampled, effected, pitched and chopped with a selection of boutique fx, saturation and digital emulations creating a wide range of tones, textures and nostalgic sonic character. We also used the MIDI to re-design the performances with new layers to create all new songstarters. To create the original trilogy collection we recorded professional performances covering soulful RnB, jazz progressions, neo-soul and perfect pop hooks. Plus emotive piano themes, warm inspirational chord sequences and improvised melodies. We recorded dusty electric piano, vintage synths, grand piano, roomy uprights, vintage e-pianos, lo-fi vinyl keys, DX and FM style keys and more.
Hollywood Soul
The Soul Surplus team had the opportunity to craft this special release at the legendary “Sound Factory Studios” in Hollywood. Everyone from the Jackson 5 to Marvin Gaye, The Red Hot Chili Peppers and Dolly Parton are just among a few of the iconic artists that have recorded at this studio. It was only right to channel the success from this space with the team and call this release “Hollywood Soul.”We were able to play original music as a 4 piece band of guitar, bass, keys and drums using different sounds and tones from pedal boards all running through the analog outboard gear in the studio. We also had our friend Dave James provide soulful vocals over these loops to give users the perfect top line melodies and textures. With 10 full music loops, along with individual instrument loops, this pack also contains 50 Astra presets to assist your creation process. The options are endless with this release, take advantage of stocking your sound library up with these authentic soulful sounds.
Analog Players Society
This pack delivers the hard-hitting drum breaks that formed the foundation of hip hop’s golden era. Amon Drum and Sean “Tricky” Dixon of the Analog Players Society recorded deep pocket breaks inspired by drummers like James Gadson and the samples used by acts such as DJ Premier, DJ Shadow, The Bomb Squad, and Pete Rock. Then they added raw piano loops and electric baselines, plus The Bridge Studio’s secret analog synth, making these sounds truly one-of-a-kind. Many sounds in this pack were layered with analog FX and tape delays, recreating elements of classic 1970s soul music influenced by the likes of James Brown.

“Retrograde” is a release of original vintage soul samples that are classic yet contemporary. There’s soul guitar as a centerpiece to these loops that producers could use to build around or to add pro instrumentation and chord voicings to their songs. At 15 lush and musical melodic loops, containing corresponding instrument stems along with 15 Astra synth presets, this pack doesn’t cut corners on adding useful tools to any producer’s sound library.
Soulstice
There's nothing like finding gold in the perfect loop when digging in the crates. Diggers will search for hours on end looking for the perfect section in the song to chop, layer, and flip into the new groove of a new composition. In our latest sample pack, Soulstice, we aimed to recreate that feeling of meeting at the apex of a sample. While we are known for creating diverse musical landscapes, we went the minimal route in our latest offering. Soulstice boasts smooth keys, coupled with straightforward bass lines and guitar licks, with the occasional visit by a choir. Port Rich Volume 1 has been a staple in the Soul Surplus sample library. To this day, it remains a best-seller, proving that this was a sound that producers everywhere were looking for. Over the last two and a half years, we’ve delivered five more volumes to the Port Rich series with compositions created not just for producers, but creatives everywhere. Over time composition packs became more of a treat, as the team delved deep into creating melodic loop packs (or sample packs). The goal was to offer a product that helped open the flood gates for more flexibility in the creation process.
