Soul Serum Keys with Harold O’Neal
You could call Harold O’Neal a jazz pianist, sure, but it would be equally accurate to call him a keyboard cryptologist. His talents are the type that clarify while they elude, making the simple seem complex and the complex, simple. His sound reaches you far outside a venue, filtered through layers of drywall, insulation, and brick, no less powerful. A simple melodic progression played by O’Neal might can slap you out of an existential stupor. And once you make out the swagger of his fingers, the delicate dance between rhythm and tone, you need more. Jay-Z, U2, Ski Beats, Bobby Watson, and Boardwalk Empire have all leaned on O’Neal for his particular style of play, and we can see why. For Soul Serum Keys, we wanted something different than your average pack of future-leaning Serum presets, so we invited O’Neal to visit our studio and play some jazz and soul keyboard arrangements with his particular approach. We recorded both his audio and his midi output, capturing the essence of his timing and tac. We turned this performance into unique Serum presets that match the overall vibes of what he played: jazz-infused keys and soul-soaked sounds. In addition to the presets, we’ve included the midi stems and the original audio, chopped into arrangement-ready loops and one-shots.

umru - sound cache
“Search engine optimized from birth” reads umru’s Twitter bio. The Estonian-American producer, unique birthname aside, has plenty of reason to hit the top of your Google feed soon. After making waves transforming Lido’s bouncy “Citi Bike” into a sinewy, floor-rumbling banger, umru’s played shows across the west and east coasts and produced remixes for the likes of Y2K and Kid Froopy. To limit umru to any genre, be it future-bass, trap or hip hop, doesn’t give due diligence to his elusive sound design. According to umru, he’s worked closely with a team of “scientists, music therapists, and shamans,” to create a pack with audio “processed through analog gear and Skype's audio codec algorithm.” That part about shamans and Skype may or may not be true, but the sound design is otherworldly enough that it may as well be true. Jazz Cuts feat. Alita Moses
This pack is the first of a five-part series created over the course of five sessions in New York. Splice Originals: Jazz Cuts was recorded and composed much like an album would be executed. This installment embodies the cool jazz scene of the west coast with an added dose of Gil Evans-style orchestration. Some of the other influences were Bill Evans, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Flying Lotus, Freddie Hubbard, Stan Getz, Astrud Gilberto, and Antonio Carlos Jobim. We also played homage to those who brought California jazz into another genre, and therefore, another era. You’ll find a heavy dose of J Dilla and Madlib-style boom-bap on the flipped side. The result is a multi-tracked orchestra, chopped and reimagined. It’s smokey jazz meets sweeping strings and horns all set to banging boom-bap beats. These sounds simultaneously evoke the nostalgia of underground clubs from the 1950s and early 2000s, taking us on a true journey through time. In the Jazz Cut sessions, Parker McAllister was on the upright bass, Ben Wareham on saxophones and trumpet, Matt Block on trumpet, Josh Henderson on violin/viola, Mike Birnbaum on drums, and Alita Moses on lead and backup vocals. With a long love of jazz, Moses pulled inspiration from the sounds of her childhood which was filled with the music from every genre from Ella Fitzgerald to Bach, and beyond.

Active: Drill Elevation enters the melodic world of elevated and lifted drill music. Spacious re-sampled pianos and gliding 808s that define the UK Drill sound sit underneath UK garage and RnB style vocals, opening up a nostalgic and ambient world of emotion and soul. Hard punchy kicks and razor sharp metallic percussion snake over rapid-fire hi-hats, layered snares, and atmospheric soundscapes. A unique kit, exploring the emotive aesthetics of drill.Filled with loops and melodies including filtered pads, pianos, full song starters, and resampled loops as well as one shots including HiHat rolls and 808 motifs. A full original drum collection has been created and designed from the ground up by one of the industry's leading drum designers. Punchy kicks, snares, and claps were created combining synthesis, foley, noise layering and sculpted with eq, saturation, and transient shaping. Every loop has been meticulously tagged and tempo-synced and all melodic loops and one shots key tagged.
OMG RONNY Kit V1
Rap producer Ronny J was born Ronald J. Spence, Jr. in New Jersey in 1992. Spencer grew up more interested in art and architecture than music, but after relocating to the Miami area for college, he began experimenting with music production and beat-making. He discovered he had a talent for it and quickly fell in with the Miami hip-hop collective C9, a group of artists led by Denzel Curry. His raw, experimental, and often lo-fi beats had a unique essence, and his tracks soon became the backdrops for hit flows from big names in the burgeoning trap scene such as Lil Pump and XXXTENTACION. He also worked with artists such as Ski Mask the Slump God, Smokepurpp, Keith Ape, and others before signing a deal with Atlantic in 2017. His debut mixtape, OMGRONNY, appeared in 2018 alongside singles like "WOTR" and "Doesn't Matter." J continued to find success the following year with collaborative tracks like the Ty Dolla $ign and Rich the Kid-assisted "Lights Out" and "Stack It Up" featuring Lil Pump. Break Tapes with Sean Hutchinson
Sean Hutchinson has been a touring and recording member of the band Bleachers since 2014 and an active force on the New York City music scene since 2007. For this release, he recorded a bunch of drum breaks in his Brooklyn studio influenced by his jazz background, experience in pop and indie rock acts, and drummers he admires. The Splice Originals crew then put the sounds through an Ampex 440-B Tape Machine for a proper crunch at 7.5 inches per second. The result is banging drums dripping in saturation, grit, and unique lo-fi character. When performing this pack, Sean fused inspiration from jazz icons like Brian Blade, Elvin Jones, and Art Blakey along with cross-genre contemporary players such as Matt Chamberlain, Jim Keltner, and Aaron Sterling.
Lofi Dub Reggae feat. Ranking Joe
Much like its people, music from the Caribbean is always moving. Always being experimented and iterated on, always morphing into the next thing that’s going to pave a path for Western pop genres to follow. Dub is no different. The subgenre grew out of reggae music in 1960s Jamaica, pioneered by King Tubby, Ruddock, Lee Scratch Perry, and Errol Thompson. Dub was one of the earliest forms of electronic music. The style consists of partial or complete instrumental remixes of existing recordings achieved by manipulating and reshaping them. This is typically done through the removal of some or all vocals, adding emphasis on the rhythm section (the stripped-down drum-and-bass track is sometimes referred to as a riddim), the application of studio effects such as echo and reverb, and the occasional dubbing of vocal or instrumental snippets from the original version or other works. Each layer of this pack was meticulously performed and recorded to create a whole vibe. Once we had bass grooves in place layered with keys and guitars, Ranking Joe joined the studio to lay down his vocals. Then we added more instruments including horn arrangements. Every single audio file was processed in some way through the Roland Space Echo, which is an essential part of the dub sound. Our goal was to transport those who visit these sounds back to the legendary Studio One days. The result is a deep-dive study of the classic dub sound.

Recorded at Aura Studios Brooklyn, Splice Originals: Pocket Drums focuses on the tight Philadelphia drum sound that Questlove pioneered. You’ll find all of the quintessential breakbeat-style grooves that capture that 1970s groovy feeling, plus a few surprises. Having picked up drum sticks at the age of two and later studying at the Dave Brubeck Institute in Stockton, CA, Corey Fonville has traveled the world with several notable artists. He was most recently touring with the Nicholas Payton Trio and is a member of the Christian Scott Quintet. He also has his own band called Butcher Brown.
Princess Girlfriend 2, a tracey brakes moment
A few years ago, BTB (before tracey brakes) a pre-Tracey Tracey uploaded a “SOPHIE/Flume inspired” sample pack to r/drumkits under the pseudonym “Princess Girlfriend”, which garnered surprising success. Its clanging snares and goopy fx went on to shape the sound of multiple offshoots of the hyperpop scene. Tracey has since achieved notoriety as a producer, vocalist, and general twitter nuisance, and continues to drop free samples every month. Brakes now aims to bridge the gap between new and old with Princess Girlfriend 2.Comprised of genre defining bass growls, galvanized drum hits, inflated sonics, and melodies that sing like anthems, this pack is the most realized iteration of Tracey’s long held sound design headcanon.We met up with Brakes at her apartment in gm_construct to talk Princess process. “You might go from something reminiscent of a gentle anime soundtrack, to being submerged in the bleeding guts of a computer, to then fall out of the world, only to come out the other side riding a massive dubstep bass from 2011,” she says, rushing to obscure a folder marked ‘princessgf_3_final_final’ from our view. “I just sort of made anything I wanted, all of it speaks to who I am. I hope to inspire people to make whatever they want, [...] no matter how stupid or insane, no matter how beautiful or grotesque—I am hopeful that this pack aids that process for someone in some way.” Whether you’re a completionist or a newcomer to the tracey brakes lore-sphere, her biggest installment yet is a must-have. We resampled the original live compositions and raw stems, creating loop layers that combine the sonics of rare vinyl with modern left-field sound design. Using classic hip-hop chopping, pitch and time, reversing, saturation and secret sauce, the samples could inspire lofi beat making and hip-hop, trap and rap or even pop and house. All sounds are 100% royalty-free and every loop has been carefully key tagged and tempo-synced.

Motor City Soul - Vintage Hip-Hop is a digital crate digger’s dream. Authentic jazz and soul compositions, golden era melodics and punchy drum samples. Invoking the classic sounds chosen by the originators of sample based hip-hop. Created in collaboration with Arthouse Acoustics, we recorded live upright pianos, soulful guitars and classy trumpet lines. These Melodic Stacks were polished, mixed and mastered and then resampled and re-imagined creating a complimentary collection. Dripping in soul, all royalty free. Care was taken in sourcing vintage instruments with character and working with talented musicians to compose and perfect instrumentation reminiscent of the 70s themes and motifs that early crate diggers were drawn to. Classic microphone and mixing techniques were employed along with modern crisp engineering. We curated the best selection of loops and one shots from the performances and dosed in analog warmth and soulful textures. When resampling the compositions, we created sounds that combine the sonics of rare vinyl with modern left-field sound design. This is the first pack in a series of four we created with The Love Experiment, an NYC-based future-soul collective led by drummer, composer, and producer Charles “Blvk Samurai” Burchell. Formed in Boston, MA in 2010, the band has performed around the United States for the last six years, sharing the stage with artists such as Talib Kweli, Iman Omari, Mad Satta, Si * Se, Retro Stefson, Nesby Phips, and many more.
